Key to my values and work ethic, I believe that our environmental crisis is made too complex and inacessible.

Clear, evidential and engaging approaches through design and technological advances are a solution to bring forward narratives to act.

Nurdle Soup is a multidisciplinary student initiative from Eindhoven University of Technology [2019–2024] aimed at addressing microplastic pollution at its source. The project, carried out by a team of a dozen of students, focuses on the environmental threat posed by nurdles—small plastic pellets used in manufacturing—that often spill during industrial handling, with an estimated 230,000 tons entering the environment annually.

Mission statements

1. Nurdle Soup strives to use technology to increase accountability for nurdle spillage and to control and reduce the spillage.

2. Nurdle Soup also strives to educate the public about the spillage of microplastics and the subsequent hazards of this spillage, in order to create more awareness for this environmental problem.

The team developed Nami, an autonomous, self-sustaining device designed to monitor nurdles in rivers and near riverbanks. Equipped with machine learning and image recognition software, Nami can detect and count nurdles in the water, storing and processing data to help evaluate and prevent industrial leakage.

As the most senior team member, I played a pivotal role in shaping and leading the Nurdle Soup project. My contributions include:

  • Leadership: 1- Serving as team manager during 2021–2022, coordinating multidisciplinary efforts and strategically guiding the project direction. 2- Ensuring weekly meetings as well as individual sessions to ensure the wellbeing and satisfaction of team members.

  • Communication: Mainting close contact and updates with our key stakeholders and ensuring smooth collaboration [stakeholders ranged from potential clients - professors and expert advisors - our incubator ‘The Innovation Space’, etc.] .

  • Technical Development: Co-creating Nami's initial prototype, focusing on the camera and data extraction modules through Raspberry Pi.

  • Outreach: 1- Managed our social media platforms to keep engagement and awareness towards our educational goal. 2- Co-developped a Customer Relations Managment tool (CRM) with over 30 contacts to facilitate networking.

  • Recognition: Our project won the Impact Award at the 2021 TU/e contest, competing against 50 other initiatives.

The Nurdle Soup project is over now and our website is down as the students involved in 2024 could not maintain a sustainable and acheivable project due to various unfortunate circumstances.  However, as part of the Stichting board we ensured our knowledge remained opensource and that all our progress and knowlledge was shared with all relevant stakeholders.
