Key to my values and work ethic, I believe that our environmental crisis is made too complex and inacessible.

Clear, evidential and engaging approaches through design and technological advances are a solution to bring forward narratives to act.

Final Report

“We envision a future where today’s installations become the material sources of tomorrow” - KONE brief

KONE is a world leader in the elevator and lifts industry. Their global impact allows for the mobility of millions of individuals. While their products follow strict quality and safety standards, they therefore face an end of life and need to be replaced. These material demanding products should not be discarded and on the contrary, find new purpopses in our growing society.

Through a 6 months collaboration with KONE we investigated as a multidisciplinary team and provided a solution as to how circularity could be integrated in this wide and complex industry.

Midway project pitch [shortened version from 10min]

Following an itterative and reflective approach, this project was two phased; 1-gather contextual as well as technical information surrounding the brief to specify a design challenge 2- develop through prototyping as well as strategic analysis the envisioned design brief.

Kilometers of elevator cables are replaced daily. Some have major deffects but most are removed precautiously to meet strict safety standards. These kilometers of ropes are discarded as their recyclability is rendered too complex and therefore generates tons of waste. However, lengthy, sturdy and steel cables are a prerequisite for Finnish forestry groups, local fishing boats and winches. These other industry needs can be met by a reusability approach.

To provide these aforementioned industries with the resources they need, KONE elevator ropes need to be checked for reusability. By means of engineering, hardware programming, software development and business analysis, a MVP rope testing machine was  developed. Using camera recoginition and training models elevator ropes are efficiently scanned for defects and provided with a re-usability report.
